What Makes Me Dizzy?

There are 3 major categories of dizziness causes : 1) inner ear, 2) nervous system, or 3) “internal medicine”.   Each of these will be explained.

Inner ear -  These account for the majority of cases of vertigo, which is defined as a feeling like things are moving.  This can range from severe spinning sensations, to a feeling that things are “just a little off kilter”.  Because the inner ear contains sensitive motion sensors, these can become disordered in a number of ways.  For example, tiny crystals can become lodged in areas that are very sensitive to movement, causing “positional vertigo”.  Another cause of inner ear dizziness is vestibular neuritis, which is a viral induced vertigo.  Occassionally, more serious forms of inner ear dizziness can exist, including tumors, or inner ear fluid problems such as leaks of excessive build-up of fluid, termed Meniere’s disease.  Fortunately, most inner ear dizziness disorders are not the serious types, nevertheless they should be evaluated thoroughly.  Often, simple rehabilitation measures can solve these problems, which otherwise may persist for years if left unattended.

Nervous system -  Occasionally, various nervous system disorders can cause dizziness such as multiple sclerosis, strokes or other serious disorders.  In these cases, dizziness is usually not the only symptom.  Migraines are another common cause of dizziness.

Internal medicine causes – The term “internal medicine” refers to a particular medical specialty dealing with metabolic, cardiovascular, circulatory, medication and many other issues addressed by “internal medicine” doctors.  Common causes of dizziness in this field are blood pressure, heart, medications, diabetes and other disorders.

To determine which of the above is responsible for your dizziness, call our office for further information.  Dizziness feelings can be similar among the above categories, therefore dizziness is difficult to “self diagnose”.  Sometimes, more than one cause exists, but fortunately, by using simple tests, most causes of dizziness can be easily determined and treated.  Dizziness is not a problem that has to be “lived with”.
